A bridesmaid is a girl or young woman who be present at to the
bride throughout or later than a wedding or marriage ceremony. Conventionally
bridesmaids were selected from unwed young women of marriageable
age. The principal bridesmaid is called the maid of honor (or
matron of honor if she is married).
A bridesmaid is frequently a close friend or sister. Several
times there are more than one bridesmaid: in recent times the
bride chooses. In the past, no person of status went out
unattended and the volume of the attendants was closely
calculated to be proper to the status of the personage.
